Our own Straight Up Cycles take on a staple of Victoria BC’s cycling scene: the commuter hybrid.
Victoria is regarded as the cycling capital of Canada, and we take great pride in the number of bike lanes, dedicated paths, amenities & social initiatives to get people out on their bikes in this town. With a thriving road scene, committed track racers, and hardcore mountain bikers, the super commuter element is an invaluable asset to our crew.
Rain. A little bit of snow. Sunny days and racing people on the Goose. These are all important considerations when searching for your perfect townie bike. We’ve got customers on steel De Rosas with flat pedals, on handmade Sevens with flat bars, and more than a few eeking out another winter on their beat up Rocky Mtn Hammer.
The bike pictured at the top of the post if our favourite 2011 Marin, and is only getting better for next year. The 2011 Pt. Reyes 29er is an Urban 29er. A flat-bar hybrid based around a hydroformed aluminum frame, the bike rolls on Continental rubber and carbon fork. Disc brakes make for all-weather performance. Straight Up has sent happy customers through Vermont’s valleys, across Provence, and out to Sooke on these bikes.
Next is a favourite titanium do-everything bike with full Campagnolo, designed from the ground-up to take the place of public transit, motorized transport and cut through the worst of winter.
It’s an Everti Odyssey, a punchy and quick road frame, with Disc brakes and room for fat tires. Equally at home on Victoria’s back streets, or deep in the interior, she’s a classy custom build, touring ready with eyeletted carbon fork, and handbuilt wheels.
Nothing says ‘utility’ like a bike designed and built specifically for you.
This massive Marinoni Turismo Extreme was built for an exceptionally tall gentleman to endure a very specific 20km commute, over cracked pavement, gravel, and through Northern BC winters. Oversized Columbus steel keep the frame tough, while a Deda Elementi finishing kit adds undeniable class.
The Mechanical disc brakes, 205mm Leonard Zinn crankarms, Vittoria Randonneurs and stealthy black-on-black paint job just highlight how much attention to detail goes into a build like this.
